Why does DTF film tension matter?
Correct film tension is important for keeping the DTF film stable and properly aligned while it moves through the printer. If the film is too loose or too tight, it can affect print quality and film feeding.
If the film is too loose:
The film may move or shift during printing.
It can cause wrinkles or uneven feeding.
The print may become misaligned or distorted.
The film can rub against the printhead, causing what is known as a “head strike”, which can potentially damage the printhead.
If the film is too tight:
The film may stretch or deform as it moves through the printer.
It can affect the position and alignment of the print.
Feeding problems may occur. The printer may struggle to pull the film forward.
Excessive tension can put unnecessary strain the printer mechanism.
Why does roll size matter?
Film tension may need to be adjusted when changing between different roll widths or roll sizes. For example, 60 cm and 42 cm rolls can behave differently, even when using the same printer and settings. The weight, diameter and way the roll feeds through the printer can all affect the tension.
The goal is to keep the film firm and stable without being stretched or too loose. The film should feed smoothly and remain flat throughout the printing process.
